“Scott, over here!”

She sat at the far end of the counter, where the shadows would cover them from prying eyes.  He admired her thinking.  She had to have been thinking the same thing about Tommy catching them together and had picked a spot where it would be difficult to spot from the outside.

“I’d almost given up hope on you.  Usually when I ask a boy to meet me, he shows up a few minutes early!”

There was only laughter in her voice and she smiled warmly as he approached.  He felt awkward.  His hair hung off of his head, hardly touched by the towel he had used to pat himself dry.  Though he rode his bike all the way here, it still dripped onto his shoulders.  He had put on his nicest clothes; a denim shirt and black jeans over his Sunday’s best dress shoes.

“S-sorry.  I was, uh, working out and…and I needed…”

“It’s okay Scott, I’m just teasing.  I’m just glad you came!”

She leaned in and gave him a friendly hug.  It was an innocent gesture, with her hands barely around his shoulders, but it was enough to stoke his internal flames.  He flushed with embarrassment, unsure of what to do next, but before he could make his mind up as to where to place his own hands she had stepped back and was leading him into one of the two booths against the far wall.

“Is that from,” she started, reaching over and touching the bruise on the side of his face.

“I-I guess it is.”

“Does it hurt?”

There was genuine concern in her voice, something which had him utterly confused.  In all the time they had gone to school together, she had never once looked his way.  Now, not only are they having a shake together, but she seemed almost…affectionate toward him?  What was going on here?

He softly echoed his thoughts, unaware that he was even doing so before it was too late.

“Wha-  What do you mean?”

He felt that familiar old friend lurking just beneath the surface, quickly coming to a boil, and even though there were parts of him that were happy just to be this close to her, his anger narrowed his thoughts with crystal clear focus.

“Do you remember when we were freshmen and I had just transferred over to our school?”

“Yes…?”

“Then you might also remember how you and your friends conspired to make me think you liked me.  Do you remember what you did?”

She looked at him with a confused look on her face and he could have easily…

“Tell me you remember what you did, you bitch!”

“Scott?  What the hell?!”

His old friend had surfaced and there was no placating him until it was gratified of the hurt he had suffered.  His hand lashed out quicker than her eye could follow, connecting solidly across her cheek and turning her head violently to the side.

“You know goddamn well what I’m talking about; how you and those ugly little cows sent me that little love letter?  I followed you around like a dog for weeks, carrying your books to class for you.  Do you remember now?!  HUH??  Do you???”

He struck her again, this time on the other cheek.  The blow landed with enough force to sent her tumbling out of the booth, where she landed on her side and looking up over her shoulder at him with something akin to fear in her eyes.  Her nose had begun to bleed out of the left side and, already, her left eye was swelling closed.

“Scott…”

“Scott, I’m so sorry about that.  God, I was such a bitch to you, wasn’t I?”

He hadn’t been aware of it, but his hands had balled into fists at some point over the last couple of minutes.  His eyes darted to (where he had hit) her, but the only red he saw was from her blush.

“N-no, I…”

“Let’s not talk about that, okay?”

She reached across the table and laid her right hand over his left.

“O-ok,” he answered, suddenly unsure of himself.  Some of the warmth had left his cheeks and for the moment his thoughts were his own.

“Dewie,” she asked of the man behind the counter.  “Could you make us a banana milkshake?”

“You got it,” the pharmacist answered.

“Scott,” she asked, bringing his attention back to her, “I asked you to come down here for a reason.”

“Yeah, I got that.”

No sooner had the words escaped him that he found himself feeling sorry they had.  The hurt expression that came across her face was all he needed to see.

“I’m sorry.  It must be…nerves, or something,” he offered lamely.

“No, it’s okay, really.  I probably deserved that,” she answered softly.  “Which is kind of the reason I wanted to talk to you.  After what Tommy did, I got to thinking.  Maybe he wouldn’t pick on you so much if you weren’t always alone.”

“What are you getting at…?”

At that moment, Dewie ambled over and placed a large glass in front of them.  A typical glass for two, it was widest at the top, where two straws stuck out facing each of them, and tapered down to the step.  There were large chunks of banana in the thick mixture and despite everything his mouth had begun to water.

“There ya kids go,” he said.  “Is there anything else…?”

“No.  Thanks Dewie,” she answered.

“Sure thing.  Enjoy.”  He walked to the back, making the two of them the only customers in the front of the store.

Scott looked at her with a quizzical expression on his face, but she only smiled as she leaned toward him.

“Come on silly.  Let’s enjoy this before it melts!  We can talk afterward.”
